Avoidance or Taking Space?

Learning the Difference for Inner Balance
In our healing journey, there are moments when we need to step back—whether to reflect, to breathe, or to protect our energy. But how do we know if we are genuinely taking healthy space… or if we are simply avoiding a situation that requires our attention?
The difference can be subtle, yet learning to recognize it is essential for emotional growth, healthy boundaries, and spiritual alignment.
What Does It Mean to Take Space?
Taking space is an intentional act of self-care. It’s a conscious pause to gather your thoughts, reflect on your feelings, and return to a situation with clarity and balance.
When you take space:
You remain aware of the situation.
You choose to pause before reacting.
You give yourself time to process emotions and gain perspective.
You intend to return and address the matter when ready.
It’s not running away—it’s creating space to respond instead of react.
What Is Avoidance?
Avoidance, on the other hand, is a form of emotional escape. Instead of creating healthy distance to reflect, avoidance suppresses or ignores what needs to be faced.
When you are avoiding:
You procrastinate or distract yourself endlessly.
You feel anxiety or guilt about what you’re not facing.
You create stories or excuses to stay away from the issue.
The situation remains unresolved and often grows heavier over time.
Avoidance may bring temporary comfort, but it often leads to stagnation, inner conflict, and unresolved emotions.
How to Recognize the Difference
It’s not always easy to tell the difference. Here are some ways to tune in:
Check Your Intention – Ask yourself: Am I stepping back to recharge and return stronger, or am I stepping away because I don’t want to deal with discomfort?
Notice the Feelings – Taking space often brings relief and calm, while avoidance carries underlying tension, guilt, or restlessness.
Look at the Pattern – A pause followed by return is healthy. A pause that turns into silence or disconnection may be avoidance.
Ask Yourself:
Am I creating clarity or just buying time?
Does this pause feel empowering or draining?
Will I revisit this situation with love and honesty?
Making a Healthy Choice for Yourself
The key is not to judge yourself, but to listen with compassion. Both avoidance and taking space come from a need for safety—one is unconscious, the other is intentional.
To make healthier choices:
Set Boundaries Clearly – Communicate: “I need some time to reflect. I will come back to this.”
Use Reflection Practices – Journaling, meditation, or breathwork can help you process emotions instead of suppressing them.
Ground Yourself – Take a walk in nature, practice Reiki, or use herbal baths to reconnect with your body and spirit.
Return with Openness – Honor your commitment to revisit the situation when you feel ready. This builds trust with yourself and others.
The Balance Between Retreat and Avoidance
Life requires balance between action and reflection, yin and yang. Taking space is a gift we give ourselves—it brings wisdom, calm, and clarity. Avoidance, however, keeps us stuck in old cycles.
Learning to recognize the difference is part of shadow work and self-awareness. Both light and shadow are teachers.
Reflection on Avoidance vs. Taking Space
These prompts can help you become more aware of whether you’re creating healthy space or slipping into avoidance. Take time with each question, breathe, and answer honestly—without judgment.
When I step away from a situation, do I feel calmer and clearer—or more anxious and unsettled?
Am I avoiding this situation because it feels uncomfortable, or am I giving myself time to reflect before responding?
What emotions do I feel when I think about returning to the situation?
How do I usually cope with discomfort—do I distract myself, or do I allow myself to sit with the feeling?
If I take space, how can I clearly communicate this boundary to others?
What would it look like to face this situation with honesty and love?
What is one small step I can take today to move from avoidance toward reflection and resolution?
The next time you feel the urge to step back, pause and ask yourself:“Am I nurturing myself with space, or am I hiding from my truth?”
Choosing consciously creates empowerment. From that place, you can set boundaries, communicate with love, and make decisions that align with your highest self.
